The rise of emerging technologies and rapid digital transformation have become decisive factors in modern warfare. In response to developments observed in Ukraine and the Middle East, grasping the significance of change, armed forces across the Transatlantic community are rearming at an unprecedented pace to adapt to the rapidly evolving, technology-driven realities of warfare.

Emerging technologies, such as unmanned platforms and the adoption of AI models, have enormous, demonstrated potential in enhancing traditional military capabilities, bringing speed of adaptation to the forefront of operational superiority and altering military decision cycles from strategic planning to tactical execution. This requires armed forces to increase their reactiveness and agility, boosting R&D and innovation while addressing the operational and ethical challenges posed by AI-enabled military technologies. Going forward, the challenge for transatlantic armed forces, traditionally risk-averse and placing a premium on force protection, will be to integrate innovation into legacy systems, enhance existing capabilities, develop new ones and adapt doctrine accordingly.

Drawing on lessons from Ukraine, NATO allies have commenced to establish innovation cycles, frame new public-private partnership models and boost investments in defence technology ecosystems. However, important questions remain regarding how effectively lessons from the Ukrainian front have been institutionalised and whether armed forces in their current state are able to adapt doctrines and rapid learning cycles in all domains to match the pace of modern warfare.

Reshaping the future of defence and military advantage will depend on how unmanned systems, drones and new digital technologies are transforming the modern battlefield and what the ramifications are in terms of strategy, tactics and operational planning for armed forces. The decisive advantage will belong to the ones capable of integrating the emerging technologies into existing doctrines and legacy equipment while continuously adapting to the digitally transforming character of warfare.
