About

The new EU Safe Hearts Plan presents a significant opportunity to improve cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes across Europe by strengthening prevention, screening, early diagnostics, integrated care, and health equity across European Member States.

At a time when cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in Europe, the challenge is no longer whether action is needed, but how to translate European ambition into meaningful improvements for citizens and health systems.

While some Member States have developed comprehensive cardiovascular health strategies and dedicated action plans, progress remains uneven across Europe. Significant disparities persist in access to prevention, timely diagnosis, treatment and care, highlighting the need to bridge the gap between EU-level recommendations and national implementation. The result is persistent and preventable inequality in outcomes across the continent.

This policymakers’ dinner roundtable will bring together European and national policymakers, health system leaders, clinicians, patient representatives and experts to explore how Member States can accelerate progress on cardiovascular health. The discussion will focus on how EU recommendations can be adapted to different national and regional health system realities

Drawing on experiences from countries that have already developed cardiovascular health plans and initiatives, the debate will facilitate cross-country and stakeholder learning. It will identify practical solutions to implementation challenges and explore how European cooperation can help align national efforts with the objectives of the EU Safe Hearts Plan, supporting more consistent and equitable cardiovascular outcomes across the Union.
