What happened?

The first months of the new year marked another period of highly uncertain geopolitical times, coming from a year of mixed developments in the Western Balkans’ EU integration process. In the current international environment, there is a pivotal opportunity to discuss and reassess the political priorities for foreign affairs and international cooperation in the region, as well as the role of the European Union, fostering investments and reforms that can advance infrastructure and support business development, while increasing economic ties with key trade partners.

This roundtable was an opportunity to discuss the current political priorities at the national and European level with Timcho Mucunski, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of the Republic of North Macedonia, with regard to the enlargement process, economic and security cooperation, and to debate on questions such as:

  • How to keep the enlargement process moving forward, showing real benefits for citizens on both sides?
  • How to expand economic integration among countries in the Balkans – and between the region and the EU single market – in parallel with the accession negotiations?
  • What reforms are needed to improve the business climate and attract investments?
