What do young Germans expect from Europe?

Policy Briefing

Citizens' Europe

As Germany assumes the presidency of the EU Council, it will face many challenges in setting a course for the future of the European Union. But what direction do young Germans want it to take?

Debating Europe held a series of online focus groups with 100 young Germans, addressing the issues that are most important to them. They all expressed a high level of concern for the state of the environment, refugee policy and wealth distribution.

One thing was also made very clear: they all want ‘more Europe’. However, it will have to be reformed. They expressed a willingness to act on this, so long as their voices are heard.

Their political demands were handed over to both European and German decision-makers at the start of the Presidency.
