About

Artificial intelligence (AI) assistants are becoming an increasingly familiar part of everyday digital life, helping people find information, save time and complete routine tasks. As these tools become more deeply integrated into personal devices and services, their usefulness may increasingly depend on access to information ranging from calendars and communications to location, financial and health data.

Underpinning the discussion, Friends of Europe’s citizen engagement unit, Debating Europe, will unveil a new survey detailing public perception of AI and technology consumer habits across eight European countries: Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland and Spain. The insights from this study will anchor a multidisciplinary dinner-debate among policymakers, civil society and industry experts to forge a pragmatic, forward-looking exchange on the policy and regulatory considerations ahead.

The policymakers’ dinner will explore how Europe can develop a trusted and competitive market for AI assistants. It will consider what meaningful consent and control should look like, how access to sensitive information can be made proportionate and secure, and how responsibility should be shared between AI developers, device manufacturers, operating-system providers and regulators.

The discussion will also examine how policymakers can reconcile the objectives of Europe’s privacy and digital competition frameworks as AI assistants become an increasingly important gateway to digital services.

Friends of Europe’s citizen engagement unit, Debating Europe, will present findings from a survey of 2,630 people across eight European countries examining attitudes towards AI assistants and related consumer habits.

The study explores how people balance convenience and greater choice against privacy, security and control, including how their willingness to grant access changes according to the sensitivity of the information involved. The findings will provide an evidence base for the discussion on how Europe can develop a trusted and competitive market for AI assistants.

Policymakers’ Dinner
Expand Policymakers’ Dinner

Key questions:

  • How can Europe expand consumer choice and competition between AI assistants without requiring users to compromise on privacy, security or control?
  • What should meaningful consent and user control look like when AI assistants require different levels of access to devices, services and sensitive data?
  • How can the objectives of the GDPR and the Digital Markets Act be applied coherently, and how should responsibility be shared between AI developers, device manufacturers, operating-system providers and regulators?
