At a conference in Brussels, organized by the think tank “Friends of Europe”, Finnish President Alexander Stubb explained why the military has always played an important role in Finland. His country had always considered Russia, as an expansionist neighbor, as a threat. “We have had more than 30 wars or conflicts with Russia since the 13th century. We have always understood that we must be prepared ,” said the president. For this reason, 900,000 men and women would have done military service, and 280,000 men and women would be ready to be mobilized in times of war.
