Although strategic partners since 2008, the relationship between Mexico and the EU needs to be deepened, with both sides likely to benefit from closer economic, cultural, and political ties, Mexican Foreign Affairs Minister, José Antonio Meade Kuribreña told a Friends of Europe ‘conversation with’.
Mexico looks at EU as a strategic partner but also the most dominant economic area in the world,” Meade Kuribreña said. “Regardless of the current challenges, the EU is an economic area that will continue to be relevant in the future.
From the EU’s perspective, he continued, closer ties with Mexico could be very advantageous. Economically speaking, Mexico has successfully managed to construct macro- and microeconomic policies aimed at securing its place in global markets, with a focus on manufacturing.
Furthermore, he added, Mexico and the EU share similar cultural, political, and legal structures. Finally, Mexico’s location in the world – with access to the Pacific basin, as well as its neighbours to the north – suggests greater benefits for a closer partnership with the EU.
