Join us for a ‘Conversation with’ Věra Jourová, European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, we will discuss her areas of responsibility to explore how the highs and lows of this wide and important brief affects the everyday lives of European citizens in terms of equality and rights.
This event is a part of our ‘Conversation with’ series, which this year functions as a look-back at the past term of the Juncker Commission’s College of Commissioners. In a pre-election year the ‘Conversation with’ series will serve as an alternative and distinct approach to the evaluation of European Commissioners and to engage in a candid conversation about their mandate and importantly the work that is unfinished which should be a priority for the next term of the Commission given the elections in May 2019.

‘Conversation with’ Věra Jourová, European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality
What’s the scorecard on gender equality at the end of this term – is it balanced? The emergence of the high profile #MeToo movement demonstrated the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment in the workplace; the enduring gender pay gap; the dominance of men in the top quartile of pay; that women’s representation in decision-making is woefully disproportionate; and out of 28 EU Commissioners only 9 are women - all point to the fact that the work on gender equality is not done.
- What can be done to buck the trend of ongoing inequality when the gains are not only social but economic - eliminating the gender pay-gap could add billions to annual gross domestic across Europe?
- After the May 2019 elections, what should be the priorities in promoting women in leadership for the next Commission?
