The March 2009 European Parliament committee vote on the provision of food information to consumers indicated that future discussions will focus on front of pack voluntary labelling schemes and how best to display key nutritional information. What information do consumers need to better understand what they are eating, and what regulatory framework might encourage them to rely more on nutrition labels when making food choices? How can industry play its part in displaying nutritional value and contents more clearly without either confusing the consumer or over-simplifying important information? These questions, amongst others, were debated during the dinner debate on 27 April.

Food labels must be realistic and universal, said the European Parliament's rapporteur on the topic, Renate Sommer MEP. "We need to find a label that is understood in the rural areas of Romania as well as in the centre of Paris," she said.
