The 8th DPF roundtable in session at the Cercle Royal Gaulois

Discussants at the Development Policy Forum (DPF)’s roundtable debate on 13 April, entitled “Where is Europe’s aid policy headed?” called for more coordination and concurrence between stakeholders in the field of development, as well as integrating other policy areas into a more comprehensive approach to development policy.

Speaking in his new role as European Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs informed the roundtable that the first challenge to improving Europe’s development aid policy lies in restoring its credibility in the eyes of recipient countries, the developed world and, importantly, its own citizenry. “The numbers don’t matter,” Piebalgs said. “What matters is meeting the targets we set out for ourselves; what’s important is the credibility of the policy and creating the mechanisms to enforce this policy.”
