Europe's uncertain energy future

Friends of Europe’s annual Energy Summit took place against a backdrop of turmoil in Europe, in energy markets and in climate change policy.

While governments are distracted by the ongoing financial crisis, energy and climate change are slipping down the policy agenda, said Fatih Birol, Chief Economist of the International Energy Agency (IEA). This is clear to see in the low expectations of a deal at the most recent climate conference in Durban, which took place the week after the summit.
