Africa: Building on growth

A new, more assertive and confident Africa is making its mark on the global stage. The continent’s economies have, for the most part, grown over the past decade; African governments have become more democratic and many countries have integrated achievement of the Millennium Development Goals into their national aspirations. However, Africa still faces significant challenges, including rampant poverty, poor healthcare and education. Basic infrastructure is still lacking and African countries remain over-dependent on exports of primary products. There are also serious problems of corruption and lack of transparency. Friends of Europe’s Africa summit brought together African leaders and senior EU policy makers, as well as representatives from civil society, business and media to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing Africa in its development trajectory.
