Ascending Africa - opportunities and challenges

Africa’s once slow-growing economies have a new spring in their step. Across the continent, so-called “lion economies” are notching up impressive growth rates.  However, poverty, poor governance and ethnic and religious strive continue to act as a brake on development.  In addition, the continent is set to witness a doubling of its population from 1 billion to 2 billion over the next 4 decades.  There is no doubt: Africa still needs deep reform. To maintain strong growth and prevent social unrest, efforts must be made to improve governance, upgrade the business and investment climate and fight corruption and bribery.  The FoE conference will bring together leading African and international policymakers, business leaders and scholars to review and comment on the hopes prompted by ascending Africa but also the key challenges the continent faces as it seeks a better future.
