Summary

Greater coordination between the world’s two largest aid donors, the US and the EU, could usher in a new era in global development, our Café Crossfire debate heard on Tuesday 5 April 2011.  Despite different philosophical approaches to development policy, with the US mindset centred on issues of national security and the EU driven by the goal of poverty eradication, the renewed impetus towards cooperation is a promising sign, and something made possible by the tectonic shift in US development policy under the Obama administration.

Donald Steinberg commented, "I have seen the single most fundamental shift in US development policy in my lifetime."
