Summary

The EU must not restrict advertising if it wants to maintain a free and independent press, our recent Café Crossfire discussion heard. The debate, which brought together MEPs, commission officials, journalist and media specialists, looked at the key challenges facing Europe's fourth estate, as newspapers struggle with falling advertising revenue and growing competition from the internet. The panel also addressed issues including EU subsidies for the media, and how Brussels can use its copyright and competition laws to protect quality journalism in an increasingly volatile market.
