Achieving the Millenium Development Goals, signed now five years ago by almost 200 countries, is a key objective for the EU and the wider international community.
But how effective has been the commitment of Europeans and others to tackling the health; education and development problems of the world’s poor, and how are we implementing those goals in the current policy orientation or programmes? How could we improve monitoring and evaluation? Bigger EU member states like Germany and Italy trail proportionally far behind smaller ones like Ireland and Denmark. And although two thirds of the world’s poor live in Asia, the region gets only 10 % of the aid allocated by the European Commission. Will the UN Millenium project and the evaluation meeting in New York, help recalibrate our targets and relaunch efforts?
