Projections show that by the year 2050, 60% of adults in Europe will be over 65 and Germany, Spain and Italy may have more citizens over 80 than under 20. This trend poses major challenges to the EU’s health and social systems. What measures should be taken to promote the idea of “ageing healthily”? How can public policies maintain independence and quality of life for Europe’s ageing population? How will we insure that sufficient resources are available over the long term to provide timely access to quality services that address the evolving health needs of European citizens?
